The R. A. Williams Library policy regarding cellular telephones attempts to balance two competing factors:

The user's expectation that the library is an environment for reading, study, and quiet collaboration.
The library's desire to accommodate the increasing usage of cell phones among our users.

When entering the library, users are expected to set cell phones and other electronic devices to silent or vibrate mode.

In designated quiet areas, users are welcome to use the texting function of their cell phones, provided that sound is turned off. In other areas or the library, cell phone use is permitted, but conversations should be conducted in a low voice. Users engaging in cell phone conversations that disrupt the work of others will be asked by library staff to step outside. Users are encouraged to report inappropriate cell phone use to a library staff member.
